Case 1: A 71-year-old man from northern Minnesota is admitted tothe hospital with complaints of severe fatigue, shortness ofbreath, “pounding heart,” and numbness in his fingers. He firstnoticed the symptoms when setting up his lake shelter for icefishing as he does every year. Although he was mostly annoyed, hiswife was concerned and made him go to the doctor. An automated CBCdone at the doctor’s office showed a hemoglobin value of 7.8 g/dLand hematocrit of 23.5%. His doctor has ordered a bone marrowbiopsy, a type and crossmatch for 3 units of packed red bloodcells, and a “direct Coombs’“ test. A sample of his blood is drawnand sent to the blood bank for the crossmatch and DAT.
