Answer these questions about the events of phagocytosis (Table 12.2 in your textbook) Once phagocytes have migrated out
questions about the events of phagocytosis (Table 12.2 in your textbook) Once phagocytes have migrated out of the bloodstream and to the infected tissue how do they recognize a bacterium or virus? After the organism has been ingested, where does it go in the cell? What kinds of enzymes are used in the phagolysosome to digest and kill bacteria? What reactive oxygen products are used in the lysosome to kill the pathogens? In some cells, (Macrophages and dendritic cells) after the pathogen is destroyed, some is eliminated, but other pieces are loaded onto an "antigen holder" called MHC Class II molecules. They can be used to show the lymphocytes of acquired immunity the antigen. This process is described in Chapter 13 (in Table 13.3) as part of Acquired Immunity, but it really gets its start in Innate Immunity.
