We want to determine how much heat is needed to change 0.125 kg of (liquid) mercury at room temperature (23 oC) into mercury vapor at the boiling point (357oC). Note that the specific heat of mercury is 139 J/(kgoC) and the latent heat of vaporization of mercury is 272000 J/kg.
(a.) How much heat is required to raise the temperature from room temperature to the boiling point?
(b.) After reaching the boiling point, a phase change occurs and the liquid mercury vaporizes. How much heat energy is associated with this phase change?
(c.) Using the results of parts (a.) and (b.), what is the total heat energy needed to vaporize liquid mercury which is originally at room temperature?
