QUESTION 3.1
Carry out a manual analysis of the walkway for the 100m span assuming that the whole of the walkway is loaded with the variable action. Based on below guidelines and data, Calculate Permanent Action (PA), Variable Action (VA), UDL (Uniform Distribution load) and point load?
Guidelines
The span from building C to the main walkway is simply supported and has a span length of 20m. It applies a point load through a support to the main walkway at 12m from the parabolic cantilever support assumed that it is at the beam’s central axis. Loads PA and VA applied to this span are similar to loads applied on the main walkway. All loads including PA (Permanent Action) and VA (Variable Action) are given as unfactored loads. Therefore, safety factors need to be applied to loads for design calculations and it must be according to British Standards (BS) codes of practice for the structural use of concrete (BS 8110), structural steelwork (BS 5950).
In the first stages of the design, it is assumed that the walkaway has the same material and cross section dimensions over the whole length. The main walkway has a pin support at one end and a roller support at the other end; it is suspended by straight cables from the parabolic cantilever and arch.
Appendix A Specification
The unfactored variable action on the walkway is 5kN/m2 (15kN/m length).
The unfactored self weight of the walkway and handrails is 20kN/m length.
Concrete grade C35 reinforcement fyk = 500N/mm2
Structural steelwork fy = 355N/mm2
Appendix B Specification
Walkway width: 3m
Walkway Total length: 100m
Parapet height: 1.4m
Clearance over ground: 6m
Clearance over lake: 7m
Maximum unsupported length of walkway: 50m
Minimum unsupported length of walkway: 30m
Variable action (pedestrian/cycle load) 5kN/m2
Concrete fcu = 35N/mm2
Reinforcement fyk = 500 N/mm2
Structural steelwork fy = 355N/mm2
