2) Design a fixture to hold the sheet plate illustrated below by the ø5-in center hole, while a press punches the 6 holes on the ø50-in pitch circle. The plate is of aluminum alloy Al7075. The plate center hole is cut with a laser cutter while the plate is cold. The plate is then heat treated and transported directly to the punch, before it cools down to ambient temperature. This practice makes it easier to punch the material. The plate is maintained at 600 °F while punching. The fixture on the press remains at near ambient temperature. Ambient temperature at the plant is about 60 °F during winter and 80 °F during summer. Account for plate thermal expansion, but neglect press and fixture thermal expansion. The punches are located on a pitch circle of ø50-in, centered at the center of the locator pin. The tolerance for punch location is Ø0.001 in. One fixture locator pin diameter that will work all year is preferred, but if the hole tolerance will be compromised, design two locator pins, one for winter and one for summer. a. What locator pin diameter and tolerance would you recommend? b. What should be the distance from the punch axes to the center axis of the locator pin so that the holes achieve nominal location when the plate cools back to ambient temperature of 70 °F? C. What should be the diameter of the punches so that the holes achieve nominal diameter when the plate cools back to ambient temperature of 70 °F? d. What would be proper ways to clamp the plate while punching? Explain. e. Provide orthographic projections of your fixture with appropriate GD&T notation. Your drawing details should reflect all Engineering Graphics rules. Provide "fully formal" | projections, since I expect you to have passed Engineering Graphics prior to enrolling IME 676.
