1. In a flat-belt drive, the smaller pulley has a diameter of 0.3 m and runs at a speed of 150 rpm. The angle of lap on this pulley is 160°. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25. The belt is on the point of slipping when 3 kW is being transmitted. Calculate the initial tensions of the belt. Which of the following alternatives would be more effective in increasing the power that can be transmitted: (i) increasing the coefficient of friction to 0.27; or (ii) increasing the initial tension by 10% ? (Ans: 1898 N, 3.16 kW, 3.3 kW)
