A centrifugal compressor operating at a pressure ratio of 3.6 and a speed of 13000 r.p.m. delivers 7 kg/s of air. The slip factor is assumed to be 0.9, the power factor 1.04, and the overall isentropic efficiency 82 per cent. Calculate the impeller outlet diameter. The blade is radial zero whirl at inlet. The Mach number of the air leaving the impeller vanes is to be equal to unity (one) so as to ensure that no shocks occur. If the losses in the impeller and diffuser are the same, what must be the impeller thickness at outlet? Assumed ambient air conditions are 101.3 kPa and 288 K. (CO3-18 marks)
