A centrifugal compressor compresses air at ambient temperature and pressure of 20 °C and 101.3 kPa respectively. The impeller runs at a tip speed of 328 m/s, the radial velocity at exit from the impeller is 32 m/s and no slip. Draw a suitable Mollier chart and calculate the Mach Number of the flow at the impeller tip. If the compressor isentropic efficiency is 88 per cent and the flow area is 0.085 m², calculate the mass flow rate of the air and rothalpy. Assume zero whirls at inlet and the blades are radial. For air: Specific heat ratio, y = 1.4, gas constant, R = 287 J/kg.K and specific heat at constant pressure, cp = 1005 J/kg.K (CO1-13 marks, CO2-6 marks)
