Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has decided to open a new campusexclusively for School of Computer Sciences in Pulau Langkawi,Kedah. As one of the leading consultants in the domain of networksecurity, your company/you have been approached by USM to designthe network infrastructure requirements of the new campus. Here issome important information related to this new campus network andinformation system:
USM is assigned with a 130.0.0.0/8 IPv4 subnet from the verybeginning. The 130.130.0.0/16 subnet block is notutilized/announced till date and has been approved to be used forthe new campus.
The campus is expected to have five (5) buildings: 1x MainOffice and Lecturer Rooms, 2x Computer Labs, and 2x LectureHalls.
o Main office and lecturer rooms: 10 (admin) and 20(lecturer) network (RJ45) ports will be connected to the corenetwork. WIFI connectivity is expected to be made available aswell.
o Each computer lab: 30x network (RJ45) ports will beconnected to the core network. WIFI connectivity is expected to bemade available as well.
o Each lecture hall: Max. seating capacity - 200pax. Two(2) network (RJ45) ports connected to core network (for lecturer’slaptop/PC). WIFI connectivity is expected to be made available aswell.
WIFI connectivity (handover) across the different building isexpected to happen seamlessly.
The lecturers and admins should have direct access to resourceswithin all other USM campuses, e.g., Main campus, Engineeringcampus, etc, when connected to the core network of the new campus.Students too shall have similar access to resources (but limited toonly resources accessible to them/students).
This new campus will also be an off-site location (for criticalservers) to recover data (such as staff and student data) andresume operations to help in maintaining business continuity andprevent data loss when the worst-case scenario occurs.
The new campus will have a self -hosted virtual library butstill be connected to the main library system of the maincampus.
