I'd like you to review the security status for our smallMicrosoft workgroup LAN. The network consists of computers workingon a variety of client platforms, such as Windows XP, WindowsVista, and Windows 7, and server products in a single environment. The workgroup contains many distinct separations in the network asdetermined by group memberships: Windows laptops: Travelingsalespeople, remote suppliers, branch offices Windows desktops:Accounting group, developer group, customer service group Windowsservers: Administrative server, Microsoft SharePoint server, ServerMessage Block (SMB) server For this assignment, go through thearchive of Microsoft Security Advisories athttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisoryarchive. Thenwrite a report that answers the following questions based on theadvisories for the past 12 months: What vulnerabilities exist forthis workgroup LAN based on the advisories? List five of them. Doany vulnerabilities involve privilege elevation? Is this considereda high-priority issue? Identify and document at least threevulnerabilities and the solutions related to the clientconfigurations.
Microsoft Common Vulnerability and Exposures (CVEs) areaddressed through security advisories with a corresponding advisoryID. Other CVE sources attach a CVE ID to advisories. The followingare a few concepts you should brush up on as you attempt thisassignment:
The implications of having a variety of client platforms, suchas Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and server products in asingle environment
The attack surfaces for these platforms
The effects of attacks on these platforms
The methods to address such attacks
