In the criminal justice system, people sometimes refer to the“CSI Effect”, meaning that people who watch forensic TV shows havesuch a high expectation of forensic evidence that they aresuspicious of other testimony and are less likely to convict in theabsence of “high-tech” forensic evidence. A social psychologistdecides to test this. They select 50 participants who say that theydo not regularly watch forensic shows and 50 participants whoreport that they are regular watchers. Participants are given awritten story of a criminal case, in which there was eyewitnesstestimony from multiple independent witnesses, but minimal forensicevidence collection or analysis (due to the strength of theeyewitness testimony). After reading the story, participants areasked to judge whether they think the defendant is “guilty” or “notguilty”..
(a) What is the null hypothesis?
) (b) What is the alternative hypothesis?
(c) If the null hypothesis is true, how many regularwatchers of forensic TV shows would you expect to give a guiltyverdict? Show your calculations.
(d) What is the effect size?
