You the student nurse have been assigned to 58-year-old women,
post-operative day number one following a total abdominal
hysterectomy. Your instructor tells you this patient has been
struggling during the night with pain management. Morphine sulfate
is one of the drugs used in her current care.
As a result of this upcoming patient care assignment the
pre-conference discussion that morning focuses on pain management
for those with both acute pain and chronic pain. Answer the
following questions as they relate to acute pain.
You medicate your patient with 4 mg of morphine IV push.
You return to your patient 10 minutes after administering the
morphine. You find her respiratory rate is 8 breaths/minute, her
oxygen saturation is 87% on 2 liters of oxygen and she is difficult
to arouse.
Following the above event your
patient discusses her concern about the possibility of becoming
addicted to the morphine.
