Module 9 - Food for Thought... There are many difficult decisions that must be made every day due to cost and availability of health care in the United States. This week's chapter discusses many of the issues, but to help bring to light more of the details about situations faced by many Americans please research answers to the following questions. Consider the implications for people who need the health services governed by these laws. In your opinion, are the laws good for citizens or not so good? 1. In 2013 as part of the Affordable Care Act people were given access to health coverage regardless of their past medical history (no pre-existing conditions allowed). Those meeting certain criteria established by the federal governmment were allowed tax credit to help pay for premiums. How effective has this legislation been in reducing the number of uninsured in the United States? Do an internet search to find out the number of uninsured Americans in 1985, 1995, 2005, & 2015. What trends can you identity? 2. In the past, there have been some states (Oregon and Maine) in which scarce health care resources are allocated (rationed) using a list of services that are determined to have effective diagnoses and treatments Are these laws still in effect in 2016? Aro there other states that have similar laws governing how health care resources will be used? Do an Internet search to find the answers to these questions. 3. Effective 2010 in NC health insurance carriers were required to cover mental health diseases the same as any other major medical illness. (Mental Health Parity Laws) Do an internet search to determine how mental health benefits are regulated in 2016 and describe the evolution of the law from 2010 to 2016. 4. Is it currently legal in NC to require individuals with unhealthy lifestyles to pay more for health insurance premiums? Do an Internet search to find current regulations.
