Synthesis of Camphor using Oxone Camphor is one of the first natural terpene products isolated from nature and is found in a variety of plant sources, including the camphor tree found in Asia. Camphor is used in a variety of products including cough suppressants, anesthetics, embalming fluid, moth repellant, and as a pharmaceutical preservative. Traditionally, camphor has been prepared using chromium based reagents, which are carcinogenic and corrosive, in addition to being extremely harmful to the environment. The salts produced in the reaction using Oxone as an oxidant are environmentally safe and are low in health and safety hazards. add notes H 12 OH 0.6 eq Oxone (12qKH50₂) cat NaCl, ethyl acetate/H₂O (15)-Borneot (15,20.45)-1.7.7-trimetybicy(22.12 (15) Camphor
Introduction Sections . Provide an overview of the background information necessary to understand the significance of your molecule and/or synthesis. . How does this synthesis/product connect with everyday life. Why is it important to society to have an optimal synthesis for your topic molecule? . Provide a balanced chemical reaction and mechanism for the reaction. Briefly summarize a mechanism in words. . A synthetic scientific article will be needed. Be sure to cite any sources used. . Describe the theories behind any method used in a synthesis to create this molecule. (reactions, techniques, instrumentation, etc.). . For example, if distillation could be used to purify your product, why is that the separation technique of choice? What principles make that technique best suited for your synthesis? Is the product easiest to identify by GC, TLC, IR, or NMR? .
