Scenario You are the owner of Pawnee Musical Instrument Supply (PMIS), a large music store located in Pawnee, Indiana. PMIS has 15 full-time employees, and the store has a reputation throughout the Midwest for excellent customer service and high-quality instrument rental, sales and repair. Besides selling and renting orchestral instruments to local/area K-12 students, as well as nearby colleges and universities, your store also specializes in selling vintage stringed instruments. Since most of the vintage instruments you sell (roughly two-thirds of all transactions) go out of state, you collect no sales tax on these sales. In March 2022, a manager of the Pawnee Parks & Recreation Department, Leslie Knope, called you to ask for your support of a local playground building project. The city had partnered with KaPOW!, a nationally known, nonprofit organization that helps communities build playgrounds
in their towns. In return for the city recognizing PMIS in its citywide call for volunteers, Ms. Knope asked for PMIS to supply 60 hours of free labor for a day in July 2022 (e.g., 6 hours of work from 10 employees, 4 hours of work from 15 employees, etc.). Besides helping your community, you recognized this as a way to strengthen your store's reputation in town, and think it could give you a chance to build and strengthen relationships with other companies and organizations in Pawnce. In her pitch to you, Ms. Knope gave you some information about KaPOW! The organization has been in existence for 15 years and has built over 2,000 playgrounds across the country. Their mission is to promote social growth by giving children a healthy alternative to excessive TV watching, computer using, and video game playing. Many communities don't build playgrounds anymore out of fear of lawsuits and safety, so in many of these towns, children are becoming less healthy and socially adept. A combination of grant money and local donations has provided the funding for the playground itself: all that is needed is people to assemble the play structures. But as we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic is still presenting logistical and safety issues. You expect that many of your employees will not want to volunteer for a number of reasons, the most prominent being the fear of becoming ill. Additionally, many of them do not have any construction experience, nor do many of them want to give up a weekend day in the summer. You also know from experience that it's hard to get volunteers to help without giving them a specific date, but that at this point, it's impossible to give a firm date. a Your task Write a letter to your employees, trying to persuade them to commit in advance to giving a day of work to build a playground in Pawnee in 2022, but only if they are fully vaccinated. Use the company's address, 220 E. Commercial Ave., Pawnee, IN 50954, as both the sender and recipients' address.
