(a) An irreversible gas phase reaction, 2A → B + C is carried out isothermally in a fixed bed reactor (ID = 0.05 m) using 1 g of Pt/y-Al2O3 catalyst. The reaction follows the first order rate law:-₁ = KC₁. Three batches of Pt/y- Al2O3 catalysts (Table 1) with different particle diameter (dp) and specific surface area (Sa) were investigated using the reactor. All particles were in spherical shape. The intrinsic specific rate constant was reported as, k = 7.73x 10¹ s-¹. Under the above-mentioned conditions, the reaction was assumed to be mass-transfer controlled. (b) Design a reactor to produce 5.75 mol B s¹ using the catalyst with the highest overall effectiveness factor. The diameter of the reactor is same as in (a). The volumetric flow rate of A is increased to 0.06 m³s 1 while the feed pressure and temperature are kept as 10 atm and 573 K respectively. A pressure drop parameter (a) of 0.004 kg cat-¹ should be taken into consideration.
