Megawatt wind turbines need strong, large bearings to support their long blades as they rotate. The bearings shown in figure 1-1 are one solution. The bearings feature two rows of tapered roller bearings with seals, lubrication, and condition monitoring in a single unit. Pre-set internal clearance simplifies accurate assembly and leads to a lighter bearing, alloying with titanium improves heat transfer and the modulus of the material. Raceway profiles control maximum stress levels and boost durability. Variable bolt-hole arrangement Unitized carrier with seals is prelubed Spacers preset assembly position for easier installation Figure 1-1 - The Timiken Co. Ultra Wind bearing. Steel or polymer retainers guide rollers Case-hardened steel inner ring improves reliability (d) If the maximum compressive stress in the Ultra Wind bearing is not to exceed 1700 N/mm², calculate the maximum radial load on the inner raceway given the following particulars. Inner raceway diameter = 2.6 m, raceway angle = 45°, roller diameter = 0.1 m, roller length = 0.15 m, elastic modulus = 300 GPa. (7 marks)
