You are working with "Lady-Dogs," a breed of dogs that look similar to "Lady" in the movie Lady and the Tramp, except that Lady-Dogs have a solid coat color. In your Lady- Dogs, alleles of a single gene, C, have a large impact on coat color. The Cª allele codes for "Chocolate" are dark brown color, the allele Cb codes for "coffee" are a lighter brown color, and the allele CC codes for "cream" are a shade of brown that is lighter than coffee and quite a bit lighter than chocolate. Collectively, the alleles of the C gene have a substantial impact on the darkness of coat color. These three alleles show complete dominance in the series: Cª > Cb > Cc. You also know that coat color in dogs is a polygenic trait that is influenced by many genes. You are puzzled by the apparently conflicting data. On the one hand, you know that many genes contribute to coat color, and that coat color in dogs spans a continuum of colors just as human skin does. On the other hand, you observe that alleles of a single gene have a large role in determining coat color of Lady-Dogs and that Lady-Dogs have three distinct, non-continuous coat colors. Provide a plausible explanation that can account for your apparently conflicting observations on coat color. Your explanation should not involve variable penetrance or variable expressivity.
