Jennifer is pregnant- she is 19 years old. She and her boyfriend have been together for six months and they usually like to party on weekends. She is poor and lives with her cousin in a house with eight other people - some are related and others are friends. You are working in a primary care facility as an intake worker and part of your role is to connect women to appropriate services and make recommendations in terms of intervention and support. Jennifer has come into your agency because she's not sure what to do. She tells you she wants to keep her baby. You are mentoring a worker who is new to the area of FASD prevention. Draft an explanation that you will provide to this new worker as to what you are going to recommend for Jennifer. This worker needs to gain a better understanding of issues around substance use and pregnancy. In your explanation provide some background for this new worker by describing at least three risk factors, and/or historical factors that may underlie Jennifer's substance use, and barriers that Jennifer would have had to overcome in order to come to your centre and ask for help. Explain the levels of prevention that will be used in addressing Jennifer's situation.
