We discussed in class some historical trends regarding the U.S. agricultural sector and the U.S. Food and Fiber Industry. We saw, for example, that most farms in the U.S. are composed of. small family farms, but most production is concentrated in large family farms and non-family farms. a) What are the two ways to measure the performance of a farm or a food and beverage manufacturing plant that we discussed in class? b) What sectors are important in the agribusiness industry? c) One specific trend we identified was the adoption of Genetically Engineered (GE) seeds for corn, soybeans, and other crops. Table 3 shows the percentage of U.S. genetically engineered corn in all corn planted from 2000 to 2020. This information is summarized in Figure 1. Why has the adoption of GE varieties been so important for crop production?
