B) Antibiotic mechanisms and selection for therapeutic use - Chapter 12 Antibiotics are selected based on their spectrum and selective toxicity. Sometimes antibiotic choices are limited drugs that also inhibit human cell processes because of the resistance of the bacteria to "first choice" antibiotics. Understanding spectrum, selective toxicity, and natural bacterial structures help in choosing antibiotics. For this section of questions, you should be able to select an appropriate antimicrobial drug, or combination of based on each particular scenario. Addie had infections from both gram positive (MRSA) and gram negative (Stenotrophomonas) bacteria. The MRSA had spread to her blood. David had very little choices when it came to treating the resistant bacteria in his leg. Things that help decide this will be the drug spectrum, its selective toxicity, and its MOA Instructions: 1 Make a TABLE (handwritten OR typed) summarizing all possible antimicrobials and their MOAs mentioned in the lecture slides for Chapter 12. Include specifics about each one that were also included in the lecture slides, making sure to include spectrum, selective toxicity, and MOA. If a particular drug works well synergistically with another, include that somehow (star next to both... or write them together). Include if the drug can be avoided by a specific mechanism of resistance. Example table: MOA Application Spectrum Selective Toxicity Drug Type
