Last year, a new positive-pressure, needleless system for
administering intravenous (IV) antibiotics was introduced. Because
the system was so easy to use and convenient for patients, the
nurses in the home infusion company where you work ordered it for
everyone. Typically, patients get their IV antibiotics four times
each day. The minibags and tubing for the regular procedure cost
the agency $22 a day. The new system costs $24 per medication
administration, or $96 a day. The agency receives the same per-diem
(daily) reimbursement for each patient. Discuss the financial
implications for the agency if this practice is continued. Generate
some optional courses of action for the nurses to consider. How
should these options be evaluated? What secondary costs, such as
the cost of treating fewer needle-stick injuries, should be
included?
