‘platforms’, managers into computer algorithms and the lines
between flexibility, insecurity, work and leisure blurring. In the
context of the ‘gig’ or ‘platform’ economy, is classical management
(scientific, bureaucratic and/or human relations management) theory
still relevant to these new organisations? In answering this
question you are required to: Take a position on the above
question. Choose one ‘gig’ organisation (e.g. Uber, Deliveroo,
Airtasker, Meituan, Upwork etc.) as an example/case study to
validate the position you have taken, ensuring you provide a sound
justification for your choice of organisation. In critical
analysis, consider one ethical issue that has emerged in your
chosen organisation's management practices, how the issue connects
to management theory and what problem/s does it is demonstrated for
management theory and practice. For example, Uber uses some forms
of scientific management, through new technologies, to performance
manage its workers. While this has helped make the organisation
more efficient and responsive to consumers Uber drivers can suffer
significant stress and mental health issues.
