The pea plant hybridization experiments conducted by Gregor Mendel revealed the foundation of genetics. Students at Westfield State University conducted a similar experiment to test whether the genotypes of pea plants match the pattern predicted by Mendelian inheritance. The number of peas of four different phenotypes is reported in the table below. Based on the Mendelian inheritance, the F2 phenotype ratio of 9:3:3:1 should be expected if the parental cross was made between a wild type (yellow round pea) and a recessive double mutant (green wrinkled pea). Sum up the total number of observation, and calculate the expected number for each category in the table. (Note: Use these data for questions 15-20) Pea color: yellow Pea shape: round Observed number Expected ratio Expected number 212 9 The total number of observation is Pea color: green Pea shape: round 65 3 11 Pea color: yellow Pea shape: wrinkled 58 3 Pea color: green Pea shape: wrinkled 25
