Q10 (8 points) The diagram shows the direction of the Earth's magnetic field over a region of the Earth where the magnetic flux density is 4.4 x 105 T. The magnetic field in a vertical plane acts at 65° to the horizontal. 65° a) i) Calculate the magnitude of the vertical component of the Earth's magnetic flux density in this region. (1 mark) ii) A positively charged cosmic particle travels in a northerly direction through the Earth's magnetic field. State the direction in which the particle will feel a force. (1 mark)
b) An aeroplane's wings and fuselage are made of metal which contains electrons that are free to move. The aeroplane flies west to east and the wing tips become charged. Earth's magnetic field north Poso 65 35m i) Explain why the wings become charged. (2 marks) ii) Identify which wing tip (left or right) will become positively charged. (1 mark) c) The aeroplane wings have a length of 35m (see diagram above) and the aeroplane is travelling at a velocity of 210 ms?. (3 marks) Calculate the induced emf between the wing tips.
