Estimation of engine performance such as maximum torque, power and engine speed are critical before any parts are designed. To initialize the design process, a rough estimation of the engine performance by using air standard cycle analysis should be analyzed. Air standard cycle analysis is one of the simplest approaches to estimate an engine performance based on crude assumption of engine working materials. Table 1 presents a list of estimated input parameters for the ideal engine cycle. As an engine design engineer, perform the following: a) State and discuss the limitations and assumptions used in air standard cycle analysis. Discussion should stress on the simplifications in the analysis compared to the actual cycle. (4 Marks) b) Calculate the state (temperature and pressure) at each operating point in the cycle based on an appropriately selected cycle type. Sketch the p-V diagram of that cycle to indicate the specific operating point. (10 Marks) c) Determine the engine nett work per cycle, the indicated (theoretical) power and torque. Discuss your estimated indicated power and torque results. (3 Marks) d) Evaluate the mean engine speed, the indicated mean effective pressure, and the engine's indicated thermal efficiency.
