Question 5: Write the chemical equation for this reaction using structural formulas. Name the ester product. Observation B1: Describe the odor of the ester product. You may wish to go into the hallway to get some fresh air. Procedure B2: Esterification of acetic acid and benzyl alcohol. Prelab Question 6: Write the chemical equation for this reaction using structural formulas. Name the ester product. Observation B2: Describe the odor of the ester product. You may wish to go into the hallway to get some fresh air. Procedure B3: Esterification of acetic acid and 3-methyl-1-butanol (isopentyl alcohol, amyl alcohol). Prelab Question 7: Write the chemical equation for this reaction using structural formulas. Name the ester product. Observation B3: Describe the odor of the ester product. You may wish to go into the hallway to get some fresh air.
reactions below, to a dry 20-mL test tube add 10 drops of the formic or glacial acetic acid. Then add 10 drops of the alcohol and 5 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid. Shake vigorously with a whipping action for 10 s. Place the tube in a hot water bath (60-70°C) for 15 min. You may want to get all three tubes ready, then heat the three together to save time. After 15 min, remove the tubes and cool for 1min. Add 2 mL of reagent water and shake. The ester products are immiscible with water and will appear as a layer separate from the water you added. With the tip of a glass rod, take a drop or two from the ester layer and touch this end of the rod to the center of a piece of labeled filter paper. Take all three filter papers into the hallway and note the odors. Procedure B1: Esterification of formic acid and 2-butanol (isobutyl alcohol). Prelab
