A 34-year-old man who is HIV positive is brought to the emergency department because of severe abdominal pain for 12 hours. He has been receiving antiretroviral therapy for the past 2 weeks. Prior to starting the medication, his CD4+ T-lymphocyte count was 35/mm3 (N <:: 500). In addition, he was diagnosed 14 days ago with disseminated Atfycobacterium avium-intrace/lulare infection by a positive blood culture and enlarged intra-abdominal lymph nodes on CT scan. His temperature is 39°C (102.2°F), pulse is 104/min, and blood pressure is 110/84 mm Hg. The lungs are clear to auscultation. Abdominal examination shows tenderness. A CT scan of the abdomen shows further enlargement of the lymph nodes since the previous CT. Improved function of which of the following cells is required for the development of these findings?

A) B lymphocytes
B) CD4 + Tlymphocytes
C) CD8 + Tlymphocytes
D) Monocytes
E) Natural killer cells
