Explain why systemic inflammation (sepsis) is characterized by high fever, high WBC count (leukocytosis), systemic edema, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).
