God in the Jungles [original title by AndrewRoddan]
“Remember, my friend, whoever you may be, when you read thisstory, that is not a study of the complicated problem ofunemployment nor a compilation of statistics dealing with facts andfigures in the abstract. It is a story of human interest dealingwith flesh and blood, telling you in a simple and direct mannersomething of the struggle for an existence on the part of thousandsof homeless men in this great Canada of ours.
As superintendent of First United Church, Vancouver, Canada, ‘theChurch of the Open Door,’ I have had a unique opportunity ofmeeting these men personally and dealing with them in a very directand practical manner. They have come to First Church for food, shelter, clothing, shoes, as well as counsel and spiritual helpthrough the church services on Sunday.
The great majority of these homeless men want work; there isabsolutely no doubt about that in my mind. During the winter of1930 and 1931 and right on until the end of August, we gave food toover 50,000 men. Our bread line at its highest was 1,252 men longin one day. We recognize the fact that this is not a solution ofthe problem, but when every other door was closed we opened up andgave food to the men.”
