Please carefully read and thoroughly answer each discussion question. All responses should be based on class material, specifically material covered in chapters 11 and 12 of the text. Information from outside sources must be paraphrased and cited. Any response taken from an internet source without being properly paraphrased and cited is considered plagiarism and will result in a zero for this assignment. 1. Imagine a neuron that is receiving signalings from hundreds of axon terminals. The majority of these axonal terminals. (pre-synaptic cells) are shown to be "firing" (releasing neurotransmitters). However, the neuron in question (post- synaptic cell) does not generate an action potential. Give a valid explanation of why this could occur and be specific (15 points). This response should be based on Chapter 11 & 12 Information. 2. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which the myelin sheaths are destroyed. What process does this interfere with and what would be the consequence? Be specific. (15 points) This response should be a minimum of a well written paragraph. 3. How does the rabies virus infect the brain following a bite from an infected animal? Be specific and explain how the virus specifically infects the nervous system. (15 points) (hint: think that most infections occur from a bite on the limbs (hand, arm, leg, etc.))
