"Nelson Mandela played a major role in the change of theapartheid regime in Africa. Apartheid regime was created byEuropean colonialists who took control in South Africa inmid-twentieth century. They ranked the population according totheir skin color, and forced them to live in separate areas of thecountry and be treated radically differently. Whites, who formedthe minority were of British and Dutch ancestors (who had arrivedthere during European colonialism), were considered to be superiorto all, had most privilege. While people with darkest skin wereconsidered to be inferior, with no right to vote and no equaleducation. They were even considered racially defunct.
Trained as a lawyer and later part of African Liberation Party,Mandela started his criticism of apartheid policies of thegovernment in 1952, joining the non-violent movement of resistanceto apartheid. Along with many others, he was arrested and put inprison for eight years for his non-violent activism.
In 1960, after the massacre of 69 unarmed black South Africansby police forces during a protest and the subsequent banning of theAfrican National Congress, Mandela abandoned his nonviolent stance. He began advocating acts of sabotage against the South Africanapartheid regime. He went underground (during which time he becameknown as the Black Pimpernel for his ability to evade capture) andwas one of the founders of “Spear of the Nation,” the military wingof the ANC. In 1962 he went to Algeria for training in guerrillawarfare and sabotage, returning to South Africa later that year. Hewas arrested again that year and spent almost three decades inprison.
When he was finally released from the prison, he worked to bringabout a peaceful transition to nonracial democracy in South Africain 1994, for which he was awarded Nobel Peace Prize. He also becamethe first president of the new South African democracy.
