The All Important “Pitch” Letter
The Pitch Letter is one of the most critical tools in PR. You mayhave a weak press release, but if you have a great pitch letter aneditor may buy your news story, that is, your press release.
Often, the Pitch Letter is the only tool a PR professional uses tosell a story idea. There may be no news or press release, so acreative PR person just comes up with ideas and crafts them intointelligent “pitches” or e-mails (not too long – a few paragraphs)that titillate an editors or reporter’s imagination. We say editoror reporter because often the section or department “editor” isresponsible for handing out stories to the reporters, as well asthe reporters coming up with their own story ideas that they inturn “pitch” their editors on in their daily story meetings. So, ineffect, you can send a pitch to either an editor or a reporter.
The best pitch letters bring the story to life. It will tell a taleof suffering or success or triumph over adversity. It talks aboutreal breakthroughs in products, services, or technology. It willuse names of real people who got real results. It will tell thereporter that interviews can be set up with these peopleimmediately. There are photographs or illustrations, too. A pitchletter is serious, but engaging. It can be conversational, but notoverly so. Writing effective pitch letters is a real art and ittakes thinking, writing, and nuanced sales skills to createeffective ones. Reporters can smell a beginner from the first word,but they appreciate someone that really understands what kind ofstories they are looking for.
