Approximately 150 words
In business, there are numerous opportunities for communicatingeffectively and appropriately. But, of course, people makemistakes. These mistakes are a result of misunderstandings, pooretiquette or manners, or lack of training. Or maybe, the person isjust a jerk. We have probably all experienced that at somepoint.
This discussion will focus on contemporary communication toolswe often use today. Think about phone, email, text, chat, videoconferencing, social media, etc. What are some of the positive andnegative aspects of having to rely on these tools? What would youdo differently in business/professional communication versuspersonal communication?
I don't want you to post a list or to address all aspects ofbusiness communication. I am looking for an anecdote (a story) thatyou can relate to that illustrates how business communication isdifferent than personal chit-chat with friends.
For example, here is a story I can share with you. Yourstory does NOT have to relate to social media. I rarely, ifever, post on Facebook, Instagram, or any other public facingsocial media tool. In addition, I don't allow myself to be tagged.Occasionally, I will allow the tag after I have reviewed theposting. Technically, I have two Facebook pages. One that ispersonal for family and friends and another I use for SMC students.I created the SMC Facebook profile back in the days when studentswanted to friend me. I deactivate that account several years ago.Now I only have one account and I am very protective of my profile. In my career, I have to maintain a professional profile in mypersonal life. I do allow posting and tagging on my LinkedInpage.
Remember, your story can be brief and can be about any aspect ofcommunication. You don't have to pick the obvious or mostwell-known either. Maybe it is unique to your home country.
(BTW, as some of you have already noted, I really do read all ofyour postings. I learn new things from many of you. I enjoyit.)
