Activity: 1
As part of your energy management duties you have been asked byyour line manager to prove by example that the work done inaccelerating a mass upwards (lift for example) is equal to the sumof the energy transfers during the process. You are then requiredto present this concept to your colleagues to show that energyefficiency improvement incentives have physical limitations.
Task 1:
A crane lifts a 1100kg car vertically with a constantacceleration of 0.75 ms-2 .The car is raised atotal height of 4m during this acceleration.
a) Determine the value of the force needed to lift the carand the work done on the car during lifting.
b) As the car is lifted it gains Kinetic Energy (KE) dueto its increasing velocity and Potential Energy (PE) due to itsposition. Determine the gain in both KE and PE.
(Hint, you will need to establish the increase in velocityduring lifting.)
c) Consider the solutions of the work done in a) and b),what can you conclude.
