PRACTICE Increases our ability to produce greater quantities of physical activity such as maximal force over a short period (lifting a weight) or more moderate levels of force over longer periods (hiking long distances or running marathons), or to move our bodies through larger ranges of motions. Is a cognitive process that leads to a reorganization of the nervous system and an attempt to solve a problem, the problem being to discover ways of moving our bodies to accomplish skill goals. Proceeds by systematically varying successive movements based on error information furnished by feedback. The changes induced tend to dissipate relatively quickly if appropriate physical activities are not performed. Changes usually confer certain health benefits. For example, running long distances is excellent conditioning for soccer, basketball, or European handball. Long-distance running also reduces the risk of heart disease, reduces the percentage of body fat, and maintains flexibility in joints. SWITCH SWITCH SWITCH SWITCH SWITCH TRAINING Increases our capacity for organizing movement patterns in complex ways to accomplish specific goals; usually measured in terms of the accuracy or timing of movements of limbs or body parts. Usually involves relatively simple, well-learned movements; is not intended to discover the best way to move but to overcome limitations in strength, endurance, or flexibility. Usually involves performing the same movements repeatedly; changes usually are in the quantity of movements (time, resistance, and so on) rather than the quality of movements. Leads to relatively permanent changes. Even after a long layoff from riding a bicycle or keyboarding, one can return quickly to one's original skill level. Usually is not aimed at inducing health benefits; may lead to improvement in the skills of archery, bowling, or Frisbee catching without any accompanying increases in fitness.
