The fetus determines the timing of labor through the activationof its hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
1. Explain why fetal cortisol levels must increase for labor tooccur. Your answer should include references to the fetalhypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and its hormones, feedbackloops between the fetus and the placenta, and lastly the synthesisof steroid hormones by the placenta.
