An 87-year-old male who is active in local politics and still walks 2 miles a day is being placed on long-acting insulin (glargine/Lantus) to help control his blood sugar. He has been a diabetic for 40 years and has some peripheral arterial disease, diabetic neuropathy in his lower extremities and diabetic retinopathy. He lives alone and has no family in the area. The nurse is teaching him how to check his blood sugar, administer his insulin, and care for his feet so he can continue to stay in his home and remain active What is the safety concerning the nurse would have with this patient? Is there any further assessment data the nurse would like to have to be able to do this? Please identify any assistive devices or equipment this gentleman could use to be successful in caring for himself, considering his current health conditions . You may include pictures of the recommended equipment.
