Comics are one way that science is communicated to the generalpublic. Comics don’t just present issues in science, but attempt tomake statements, often exaggerate issues, and put them in thecontext of society. Therefore, we can use comics to in the courseto demonstrate your understanding of the biology being presented aswell as your ability to thoroughly describe a visually depictedissue. This is the comic that was assigned to me.
i do not get science humor about it. (yes i know, it tried but Icant relate). Below is the following questions
STILL SINGLE? DNA ALWAYS. RNA D₂-Doodles
Description: In the cartoon, there is a middle-aged man climbing up a large DNA strand. The man is looking up with a concerned/puzzled expression on his face as steps. He intellectually states that he is climbing to see where his life is going to take him. Biology: This cartoon corresponds perfectly with our current chapter on disease inheritance and parts of our last chapter on meiosis. The current chapter and the chapter on meiosis both discuss the possibility of individuals being genetically encoded to develop genetic/hereditary diseases from their parents. The cartoon itself addresses the fact the man may suffer from an increased risk of developing a disease or may already have a disease as a direct result of his genetic makeup (this is why he has the worried expression). I'LL CLIMB UP THIS STRAND OF DNA TO SEE WHERE LIFE TAKES ME Analysis: The cartoon depicts how an individual may be prone to a hereditary or genetic disease due to inheritance. The cartoon itself is accurate because of the way it mirror the reality behind genetics. The middle-aged man in this cartoon may suffer from an unavoidable disease or higher risk for hereditary diseases as he ages due to his own individual genetic makeup. We all contain our own unique DNA. Because DNA is a randomized combination of our parent's DNA, we often inherited a higher risk of family specific disease or a born with an unavoidable genetic disease. I, genetically, have a higher risk of high blood pressure, cancer, and arthritis because it runs in my family's gene pool. Purpose: The cartoon is trying to comically communicate the idea of hereditary or genetic diseases and how they will affect an individual's life. The figure in the cartoon is climbing a metaphorical and symbolic DNA ladder. The ladder itself is a metaphor for a lifespan in which an individual grows and ages while the DNA ladder is symbolic for an individual's genetic. By combining the symbolic and metaphorical meaning behind the DNA ladder, the artist is able to clearly depict his concept. The man in the cartoon displays a concerned-like expression as he declares "I'll climb up this strand of DNA to see where life takes me" making the cartoon elucidate a slight sense of sarcasm resulting in an overall humorous tone. The comic's creator, Chris Madden, did a wonderful job communicating something funny while conveying a scientific message. CHRIS MADDEN
