The following is a small portion of an mRNA encoding theC-terminal amino acids and the stop codon of a wild-typepolypeptide:
5’- ...CAACUCCAGACACGCUCACUGCGUCUAAAAGUAGUC ... -3’
the resulting amino acid sequence contains the amino acid Asnencoded by the codon 5'-AAC-3'. The remainder of the aminoacids are encoded in the same reading frame:
N...Asn-Ser-Arg-His-Ala-His-Cys-Val-C
The c-terminal ends of two mutant proteins produced by allelesof this gene are as follows:
Mutant 1: N...Asn-Ser-Arg-His-Ala-His-C
Mutant 2:N...Asn-Ser-Arg-His-Ala-His-Cys-Val-Ser-Lys-C
identify the mutational events that produce each of the mutantproteins, explaining the amino acid changes and the nucleotidechanges that could have produced them.
