In a typical system with long pipes, the major losses give a major contribution to the head loss in the straight sections of the pipe compared to the minor losses. (a) Water at 15°C is flowing steadily in a 30-m-long and 5-cm-diameter horizontal pipe made of stainless steel (surface roughness, = 0.002 mm) at a rate of 14 LPM. Determine i) ii) iii) iv) v) vi) the velocity of the inlet flow of the water, Reynolds number and flow regime flowing in the pipe, friction factor in the pipe (you may use any possible method, state your method). i) ii) the pressure drop. the head loss, and the pumping power required to overcome this pressure drop. [28 Marks] [CO2, PO3, C3] (b) If the horizontal pipe in Question 1 (a) makes a sudden turn to 90° miter bend (without vanes) in the middle of the pipe, calculate minor loss, and total head loss in the pipe.
