Hermitian operators in quantum mechanics
Question 3 [8 points (a: 3, b: 3, c: 2)] (a) Why do we focus mostly on hermitian operators in quantum mechanics? What prop- erty makes them appropriate to describe observables? (b) In the course we also encountered some non-hermitian operators, and in particular some operators that are hermitian conjugates of each other. Provide an example of such operators and comment on their usefulness and applications. (c) Prove that the commutator of two hermitian operators is an antihermitian operator 900 (i.e. an operator satisfying T = -T).
