CASE STUDY
The Sands of Time are Running Out
Jenny is a student at a private college. She also workspart-time at a clothing retail store to fund her studies. Theretail store needs Jenny to promote sales in view of the Hari Rayafestival, thus Jenny has been working extra hours at herpart-time job. Jenny, on the other hand, needs the extra money from the job to pay for her upcoming semester’s tuition feesand to fix her car so that she can drive home for the longsemester holidays. The pending holidays also means the end ofher current semester and, unfortunately, the start of finalexaminations. Jenny simply does not have the time to do both,i.e. study for all her final examination papers and work the additional hours that she needs. Jenny has to sacrifice somethingand decides to pretend being sick on the day of her Business Management final examination paper, so that she can take themake-up examination the follow week. This will give her moretime to study. She also knows that it will not be hard to get amedical certificate (MC) from the busy college health clinic. Her friend, Dennis, works at the clinic and will be able to provideher with a sheet of the clinic’s letterhead stationery. “Even if I have to lie, it’s fair that I get extra time to study,”Jenny convinces herself, “because I have to work; I can’tstudy all the time like students who have their parents topay for everything.”
Question:
3. Lying is a universally accepted bad moral value. Justify whylying is immoral and unethical.
