Developing a Strategic Prospecting Plan
Background
Jennifer Hamman graduated from the state university and washired as a sales representative for the Logistics Company. TheLogistics Company is a transportation broker that links companiesneeding products shipped with trucking firms to carry theshipments. After an initial training program, Jennifer was given acouple of existing company customers and a small list of leads toget her started. She began by serving the shipment needs of theexisting customers. This gave her some confidence, butshe realized that for her to be successful, she must beginprospecting and try to identify the best sales opportunities. TheLogistics Company provides an ongoing list of leads that can beaccessed by all salespeople. Once a salesperson contacts one ofthese leads, no other salesperson can contact them. Jenniferstarted her prospecting by contacting these leads.
Current Situation
Jennifer has been calling a number of leadseach day, but has not been very successful in generatingmuch business. She feels like she is wasting much of her time onleads that are not good sales opportunities. The leads provided byher company are not qualified in any way and the trainingprogram she attended focused on cold calling as the basicprospecting method. Jennifer took a professional selling class incollege and remembered that the chapter on prospecting emphasizedthe need to follow the strategic prospecting process to identifythe best sales opportunities. She found her professional sellingtextbook, went to the chapter on prospecting, and decidedto create a strategic prospecting plan.
