SECTION 1: TRIPLE JUMP EXERCISE (TJE) REGARDING AN ETHICAL DILEMMA Introduction: A Triple Jump Exercise (TJE) is a way of assessing your problem-solving skills and your ability to learn independently. Read scenario 1. Mr Jasper Collins, 65 years old, has told his family many times that he does not want to be ventilated or do extraordinary measures to prolong his life. Mr Collins told his family he intended to make a living will, but they are unsure if he made one. Mr Collins has now arrived in the emergency unit with a newly developed decreased level of consciousness (confusion and inappropriate words). He presented with right-sided weakness a half-hour before his arrival and then lost consciousness. His family verbalizes Mr Collins' request about not being ventilated or receiving CPR from the Doctor. The Doctor informs them that this is a treatable condition and that their father still has several good years ahead of him. The patient's physical condition is critical, but the Doctor will not agree to a "Do Not Resuscitate" (DNR) order. The Doctor's position is that he should do what is necessary to reverse the condition and save the patient in the absence of a written directive. 2. Use the three steps of the Triple Jump Exercise, (Analyse the problem, information search, feedback) to show how you would deal with the ethical dilemma in Scenario 1. Step 1: Analyse the problem Identify the ethical dilemma in the scenario and explain your interpretation or reasons for the ethical dilemma. • Explain relevant legislation to this dilemma, including code of ethics and ethical values when interpreting the ethical dilemma. Step 2: Information search • Conduct a brief literature search utilizing two-three internet sources and your prescribed textbooks. • Provide a synopsis / summary of information pertaining to this ethical dilemma. / Step 3: Feedback Describe the ethical decision making process. Apply the ethical decision making process to the scenario. • Provide resolution(s) for the ethical dilemma supported by legislation and /or resources
