Suppose you are a poor and uneducated person from Chicago. Youronly chance for success in life is through athletics, particularlydistance running. You have trained hard, and you have placed highin ten-kilometer and marathon races, but you have never won a majorrace. You need to be just a little faster to win. In one month, there is the Chicago Marathon, with a cash prize of $50,000 for thewinner. There is a good chance that the winner will also get alucrative endorsement contract with a major running-shoe company. Afriend who is an athletic trainer tells you she has obtained alimited supply of a new drug that dramatically improves enduranceby preventing the buildup of lactic acid in the muscles. The drugis the result of genetic research on human growth hormones, and ithas been tested on animals with no bad side effects thus far. Itseems much safer and more effective than steroids or the humangrowth hormones used by some runners. Your friend offers you amonth’s supply of the drug. She assures you that it is not on thelist of banned drugs and that it will not show up on drug tests ---or at least the drug tests currently used. In return for giving youthe drug, your friend wants $5,000, but only if you win the raceand collect the $50,000 cash prize. If you do not win, you owe hernothing.
Defend your position on why it is unethical to use thedrug using utilitarianism.
