Water Balance The water balance of a location is the interactions of the input, precipitation (Precip) and output of monture Water in the systems can be used, evapotranspiration (ET), held un to in the soil storage, or shed as runoft surplus Every location has a potential evapotranspiration (PE) which is the maximum possible amount of water the system can use in the month. The system also has an actual evapotranspiration (AEL which is how much water is used by the system that month. The AE will be all available water up to the PE amount. When we do not have enough water in the system from precipitation to fulfill the PE amount water is taken from the soll storage. The soil has a maximum amount of water that it can hold in storage called the water holding capacity (WHC). If there is not enough water in the system between the precipitation and the storage to equal the PE ww will have a deficit if there is more water in the system than is required by PE the water is used to recharge be the storage to the its maximum WHC. Any water that remains after recharge is the surplus and flows out of the system It we have the monthly precipitation. PE, and a starting storage amount we can the calculate the locations water balance table. To do this we take the following steps Calculate the difference between Precip and PE: Diff-Precip-PE Calculate the current storage level: Storage Calculate the change in strorage: & Storage Calculate the AE LIPE Precip+ previous month storage then AE- PE PE Precipe previous month storage then AE- Precip previous months storage Calculate the deficit: Storage must-0 to have a deficit storage-O then Def-PE-AE Previous month storage Di Current month storage- Previous month storage Calculate the surplus Storage must maximum WHC to have a surplus If storage max WHC then: Surplus Previous month storage- current storage Diff
