Juan is a 70-year-old man with a history of hypertension. He
started dialysis treatment for ESRD eight months ago. Before
starting dialysis, he was closely monitored by his doctors for his
condition as he had polyuria and nocturia. In addition to having
problems managing hypertension, he has lost his appetite, is weak,
tired, and has swelling around his ankles. Juan was arguing with
his doctor about starting dialysis. The doctor insisted before the
signs and symptoms of uremia increased.
1. Compare azotemia and uremia
2. Two years ago Juan's doctor had advised him to decrease his
protein intake. Juan did not follow his doctor's recommendations
and continued to eat chicken, pork, steak, and eggs at least once a
day. Why did the doctor warn him about his diet?
3. Juan's weakness and tiredness are symptoms of anemia. Why is
he anemic?
4. Why is Juan's doctor concerned about left ventricular
dysfunction?
