Part B: Bonding Types 4. You will notice the compounds above are separated into "mainly" covalent and "mainly" ionic compounds. How can these compounds be "mainly" ionic or "mainly" covalent? To address this issue, a. Explain thoroughly how an ionic bond, a covalent bond, and a polar covalent bond is defined. b. Redraw, by hand, the Lewis structures you found in Wikipedia then sign and date the paper and take a picture to include in your project. Perform an analysis of your two compounds for the type of bonding, labeling each bond as to its character (i.e. ionic, covalent, or polar covalent). Explain your reasoning. c. The ionic bonding type involves a transfer of electrons. For the "mainly" ionic compound, identify the metal. Write out the complete electron configuration for a neutral atom of this metal AND the complete electron configuration for the metal ion found in your "mainly" ionic compound. Explain why the electrons were lost from those specific orbitals to form the ion. d. Explain the change in size upon formation of the cation from the neutral atom.
