•If a patient has suspected septicemia the clinician will always
treat before the blood cultures become positive in the laboratory.
Why would the patient be started on antibiotics before the sample
in the bottle is even positive if septicaemia is suspected? How
useful therefore are blood culture samples?
•Why is it important to use highly nutritious media in blood
culture system?
•How useful is the gram stain result on a positive blood
culture? Why is it important that the result of the gram stain is
reported to clinicians as quickly as possible?
•Is it worthwhile to perform a direct microscopic gram stain
